Inter Club Report

Exeter City Swimming Club wrenched the Devon Interclub championship from the grasp of National League
champions Plymouth Leander with a spirited team display at Central Park, Plymouth , and comes on the back
of the city team finishing as top club at this years relay championships. In clinching the title for the first time
since 1997 Exeter dominated the 15-team competition to amass a total of 493 points, well clear of second
placed Plymouth with 456pts, Dinnaton in third with 422pts, just ahead of Barnstaple with 416pts.

With three heats of every event needing to be swum to accommodate all the teams there were 15pts for the
winner down to 1pt for 15th. Exeter figured highly in every race of the day placing 1st or 2nd in 28 of the 37
events.

Top scoring age groups were the 11/under and 13/u girls who both captured 58 of the 60 points on offer. In the
11’s Jade Webb swam to victory in the 50m backstroke and Jo Sanders was more than a body length clear in
winning the 50m breaststroke, and they were backed up by Vicky Bishop who was 2nd in both the 50m
freestyle and 50m butterfly events. In the 13’s Jess Twose was a clear winner in the 50m backstroke and
freestyle swims and Amy Cole produced two pb’s in placing 2nd in both the breaststroke and butterfly events.

Three other age groups were only 4pts shy of scoring the maximum. For the 13/u boys George Fearnley turned
on the power to easily win the 50m freestyle and butterfly, and was well supported by Tom Wadeley-Jones who
was 2nd in the backstroke and Elliott Randall who was 4th in the breaststroke, both lopping well over a second
from their pb’s. The 15/u girls were just as strong with Sally Whybra being victorious in the 100m butterfly, Maria
Griss and Becca Hitt taking 2nd in their respective freestyle and breaststroke 100m swims, and with Connie
Fearnley placing 3rd in the backstroke. The open men fared just as well with a 1st in the 100m butterfly and a
2nd in the 100m breaststroke from Alex Wooldridge, 2nd from Nye Levitt in the backstroke and a 3rd in the
freestyle from Warren Barrett.

In the other age groups Maria Graney totalled 29pts from a possible 30pts from a win in the open freestyle and
a 2nd place in the backstroke, Liam Spruce picked up 28/30pts with two second place swims in the 15/u
breaststroke and butterfly events, 11yr old George Doggett swam to 2nd in the 50m butterfly, Sally Whybra
added a 2nd in the open butterfly to her earlier win, and 10yr old Freddie Fearnley placed 3rd in the 11/u
backstroke. The team were backed up with super swims by Elliott Chandler in the 11/u breaststroke and Sam
Collett in the 15/u backstroke.

After dominating the individual events, Exeter proceeded to reign supreme throughout the final set of relay
races scoring a near maximum 73pts out of a possible 75pts. The first four relays were mixed medley races
through the age groups, and Exeter came 2nd in the 11/u, 1st in the 13/u, 2nd in the 15/u and won the open.
Exeter capped the superb team performance on the day with a clear victory in the 8 x 50m cannon relay leading
from start to finish.

Exeter coach Jon Randall was delighted with the team performance ‘I expected more of a sound challenge
from Plymouth and Barnstaple , but it just didn’t materialise, and it was due to our all-around solid team effort.
To win so convincingly is a real boost for the club and shows that we’re continuing to improve as a team.’
