Plymouth Sprint Meet Sunday 29th March 2009
An early start for all those concerned in the morning session; a nine o’clock warm up may not sound that bad to the old pro’s but with the clocks going forward the six am start was hard work.
That said there was a strong Exeter presence with swimmers in all events and most of the morning heats and almost every swim was faster than entry times.
In the nine year old girls Katie Townsend was the pick of the crop. Only two days after her birthday she took three golds with a bronze in the backstroke. Amy Linnington also performed well picking up three silvers while Caitlin Jelley took seconds off each of her entry times. Katie took the overall award in the BAGCAT points with Amy a close second.
In the ten year old girls Rhiannon Loveman took the backstroke gold and a bronze in the fly; Lauren Murphy was just outside the medals in the breaststroke while Rebecca Ellis and Abigail Gray were both fly heat winners in times well inside their entry time. Nina Groves and Megan Galliford both put in some excellent performances and were involved in some very tight finishes. Rhiannon collected the third place in the BAGCAT points and Lauren was in sixth place.
In the eleven year old girls Daisy Collins-Board took seconds off her start time in the backstroke, Rebecca Rutter placed a very creditable 13th in a very fast breastroke event. Emma Bullous picked up a new PB in a very close heat in the freestyle and Charlotte Davidson was a heat winner in a PB in the breaststroke.
In the boys there was a large group of ten year olds from Exeter all of whom put in some good swims; breaststroke looks to have a good future as Luca Lavric, James Walmsley, Joseph Board and Liam White placed from seven to ten in the overall standings. James Lee and Liam Colbourne battled it out in an exciting fly heat which James won taking ten seconds off his start time. Harry Jenkins put in a good performance to place second in his freestyle heat. Cameron Bedford displayed all the requirements of a good medley swimmer with good performances on all strokes. James Lee was fourth in the BAGCAT points.
In the eleven year old boys George Doggett collected a medal of each colour with an excellent finish in the fly to take the gold. Elliot Chandler put in his best swim in the breaststroke to take the fifth place overall. George, not surprisingly, picked up an excellent second place in the BAGCAT points.
In the afternoon session Samantha Gray won gold in the12 year old girls fly. Sam and Chloe Hartland both had good afternoons and were well supported by the other girls in this age group, Jasmine Jelley, Elazni Singleton, Chelsea Rutherford and Harriet Bennet with all girls producing a range of pb’s through the strokes. Samantha Gray picked up fourth place in the BAGCAT points.
In the boys Daniel Goodchild kept the flag flying as the only representative from Exeter. He performed steadily throughout the gala with a creditable sixth in the breaststroke and with three out of his four swims being pb’s Dan placed overall seventh in the BAGCAT points. |
