National Arena League

Round 2

Exeter City Swimming Club produced a magnificent team effort at the 2nd round of the Arena National Swimming League Western Premier Division placing 3rd and on the night and securing a place in the final. Competing in the toughest 2nd round draw against top national teams Millfield and City of Cardiff, Exeter enjoyed home pool advantage and rose to the challenge being helped along by deafening support.

Top scoring for the city club were the 11/under girls team which scored 31 out of a possible 36 points. Georgia Cotterill romped to victory in a pb time of 35.42 in the 50m butterfly and followed it up with 2nd in the 50m freestyle. Tina Song-Ashdown repeated her success from the first round with a win in the 50m backstroke with a time of 36.86. Georgia and Tina were joined by Millie Price and Rhiannon Loveman to score maximum points in both the medley and freestyle relays.

13yr old national schools champion George Fearnley was the only Exeter double winner on the night with victories in the 100m freestyle (59.07) and 100m butterfly (1:04.21). The 15/u girls and 15/u boys teams both scored 26pts from their possible 36 with all around solid racing. The medley and freestyle relays of both swam to 2nd place and Sally Whybra in the 100m butterfly, Jess Twose in the 100m backstroke and Simon Cooper in the 100m breaststroke all swam to 2nd place too.

George Doggett pb’d in the 11/u 50m butterfly to be just pipped for the win, and the 13/u boys team of George Fearnley, Elliott Randall, Dan Goodchild and Ed Jackson were excellent in squeaking out a 2nd place in the freestyle relay. It was good to see the return of Exeter favourite Ryan Tancock to the racing waters in Exeter colours, providing inspiration to the team in and out of the pool. A 2nd pace in the 100m butterfly in a time of 55.99 and a 3rd in the 100m freestyle with a time of 52.84 were outstanding individual efforts.

Millfield, 3rd in the national ‘A’ final last year, were the winners with on the night with 216 points, last years national ‘B’ final winners City of Cardiff were 2nd with 205 points, Exeter 3rd with 188, Welsh team Nofio Sir Gar 4th with 154, Chard 5th with 140 and Ferndown 6th with 117.

Exeter coach Jon Randall was impressed with the Exeter performance ‘we knew we had to swim well to reach the final, and I have to say it was a whole team effort tonight – swimmers, coaches, team managers, and supporters. The atmosphere was electric and we produced the swimming to match. I’m pretty sure the last set of 8 relays was the best ever block of relays I’ve seen from Exeter. We were competitive on every race. The whole team is now looking forward to the final at Millfield in December. Bring it on!’

Round 1

Exeter City Swimming Club are host to some of the premier swimmers and swimming clubs in the country at Pyramids on Saturday for the 2nd round of the Arena National Swimming League – Western Premier Division. Millfield School, 3rd in last years national ‘A’ final, and national ‘B’ winners City of Cardiff are likely to dominate the gala, with Exeter entering seeded 3rd, followed by Welsh team Nofio Sir Gar, Chard and Ferndown.

The meet clashes with the national university short course championships and Exeter will be without a number of key senior swimmers, but do welcome back ex-national champion Ryan Tancock and past Exeter standout Ronnie Lee for the clash. Supporting for the home club in the age groups will be national schools champion George Fearnley, 13, and national silver medallist Jess Twose, 14.

Exeter are on course to make the Western Division premier league final in December, but will have to score enough points in their gala to hold off the challenge of top Welsh team Bridgend County, who swim at Plymouth earlier in the day, to secure their final place.

Exeter coach Jon Randall said ‘with a full team we’d undoubtedly be one of the top 8 teams in this league, which is by far the best in the country, but without some of our key swimmers this week every team member has to stand up and be counted on race day for us to progress. Home advantage is a bonus for us in what should be a cracking swimming gala.’

Kim "Our Little Diamond" Stead celebrates the big 50!

Kim is pictured at Pyramids on Monday 10th March 2008 celebrating a big birthday - please see the balloon! All those lucky enough to be there had the opportunity to sample some of Kim's cakes. They were very good although we were disappointed that there were no precious stones in them!

Kim is wearing a diamond tiara rumoured to contain the famous "Stead Diamond". Kim posed in a very fashionable tee-shirt in white cotton, embellished with a photo and quote taken from a well known national newspaper - the Daily Mail.

Please see the article as it appeared in the Western Morning News. Similar articles appeared in the Express & Echo (nearly a full page) on page 3 and the Daily Mail. Kim also featured on the BBC Westcountry News.

We wish you all the very best!

2nd June 2007, Riverside Pool, Exeter

Exeter City hosted a very successful and enjoyable Imps Gala for swimmers 12 and under. Clubs from Crediton, Dawlish, Exmouth and Tiverton took part with two teams from Exeter City. It was a close competition for most of the gala with just one point between Exeter B and Tiverton at the half way stage. In the end it was a win for Exeter B with 230 points, Tiverton came second with 210, Dawlish and Exmouth came joint third with 154, Crediton fifth with 152 and Exeter A with 103.

Thank you to all the clubs who took part and to those who were officials or helped.

September 2007, English Channel Update

Just to let you know I'm back from a very successful Channel Swim!

We left Samphire Hoe, near Dover, at 5.05am on Wednesday 5th September. We crossed to France in just 10 hours 59 mins, landing on Cap Gris Nez at 4.04pm. We then swam straight back to England, this time encountering strong currents and tides, then finally, 15 hours later, at 7.04am, on Thursday 6th September, we landed back at Samphire Hoe - just making it in before the tide changed and took us out into the North Sea!

It was a tremendous experience, and a very tough challenge for the boys (and me!). We have raised over £7,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, and would like to reach £10,000. Thank you to all who have sponsored us so far. If you would like to make a donation, logon to www.42mileswim.co.uk, and follow the link, or see me or any of the coaches. Many thanks for your support and messages, they have been much appreciated.

9th October 2006, The Pyramids, Exeter

Whilst clearing out a redundant Devon County Council building an old black shield was found.  Babs Tolley, the Council’s Support Officer for Children and Young People’s Services, who found it said “It was black, horribly dirty and unrecognizable. After realizing that it was possibly significant, I contacted County Hall, before speaking to Exeter City Swimming Club to ask whether they would like it.” Babs took the shield home to clean it revealing a beautifully engraved trophy depicting swimmers in old-fashioned swimming costumes.

The trophy is called the "Exeter Schools Challenge Shield" and dates from 1892.  It was competed for every year until 1940 when there was a break until 1947.  However, the last inscription is dated 1947 and it appears that it has been "lost" to the club since then.

The trophy was presented back to the club by Councillor John Smith, Devon County Council’s Executive Member for Children and Young People and it was gratefully received by Mr. Dennis Fursman, our President.  Accompanying Councillor Smith was Babs Tolley together with Councillor Westlake.

SeptemberOctober 2006 040.jpg (1427823 bytes)

The shield shows an engraving of swimmers diving from a punt or pontoon.  This reminded Dennis that many years ago the club swam in the River Exe from such a pontoon that was moored on the river near the railway bridge on Bonhay Road.  Rather than being just a delightful picture it could actually reflect the normal facilities for the club in 1892!

The club will now decide how put the trophy to best use.  Unfortunately it is too big to be displayed in our trophy cabinet at the Pyramids.
